Hıdrellez Celebrations in Istanbul
Hıdırellez or Hıdrellez is one of the seasonal eid celebrated in Turkic world. It is the day when Prophets Hızır (Al-Khidr) and Ilyas (Elijah) met on the earth. Hıdırellez starts on May 5 night and falls on May 6. It is celebrated in Turkey and all around the Turkic world. Celebrations mean the arrival of spring and it is also celebrated in Balkan countries which had been controlled under the Ottoman rule.
There are various ideas about Hıdrellez‘s history. Some assumes that Hıdrellez belongs to Mesopotamian and Anatolian culture while others think that it belongs to Middle Asian Turkic culture and believes before Islamic period. Similar celebrations are seen in Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Persia, Balkans and even all East Mediterranean countries which are related to the arrival of spring. A strong belief most of people have suggests that Hızır had gained immortality by drinking the water of life (Ab-ı Hayat). He is always on the earth, especially in the spring, and helps people. Hızır is a symbol of wander and luck as well.
Hıdrellez is generally celebrated green and wooden areas or riversides called “Hıdırlık“. It has been celebrated in Ahırkapı in Istanbul for 11 years however this year Hıdrellez is being celebrated at Parkorman that entry costs 20 TL because Ahırkapı does not have enough area for a huge crowd!
